YOU should join ASCEWhy
BUILD YOUR NETWORK
ASCE is a great place to connect with a network of friends and colleagues that share your passion for civil engineering. It's a well known fact that WHO you know is often more important than WHAT you know. The relationships built with other civil engineering students now will provide opportunities to expand your career and grow as an engineer. You'll spend your entire career building a professional network. Better get started . . . .
DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS
A high quality education from an ABET accredited engineering university is a requirement for civil engineers, but it's still not enough to succeed in the workforce. Even more essential are the "intangible" leadership and communication skills that engineering firms and companies want to see in their new hires. Involvement in ASCE as a student member is a great way to start cultivating these skills.
GAIN EXPERIENCE AND ENHANCE YOUR RESUME
As a fresh college graduate, one of your biggest challenges to finding that first job will be your lack of experience. Participation in ASCE gives student members the hands-on experience with exciting projects like the Concrete Canoe, Steel Bridge, and community service projects. These projects provide invaluable project management, problem solving, and leadership experience - exactly the kind of experience you need to be a successful

DO I NEED TO BE A STUDENT MEMBER OF NATIONAL ASCE AND MY STUDENT CHAPTER?
Simply put . . . YES! Membership in your local student chapter isn't fully complete without signing up as a national ASCE student member, and you won't have access to nearly all of the great benefits of membership if you don't sign up with the national ASCE. Conversely, membership in national ASCE as a student member doesn't get you access to all of the great benefits of McNeese Student Chapter membership like the opportunity to vote on chapter business and work on great projects, get a free shirt and prizes, and do your part as a member of ASCE.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATIONAL ASCE MEMBERSHIP AND STUDENT CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP?
The best way to approach this question is that it's not a "one or the other" kind of deal. To become an active member of your local student chapter, it's required that you sign up with the national ASCE. Our McNeese Student Chapter of ASCE is a part of the national ASCE, is in the Louisiana Section of ASCE, and is overseen by the Acadiana Branch of the ASCE. It's all part of the same great organization, but dues are collected at the branch, national, and student chapter levels. Fortunately for students - membership is free at the branch and national level, we just have to pay a small $15.00 yearly dues at the student chapter level to help with expenses.
